Literacy is the theme for this month.

The RI theme this month is Literacy and we take a look at initiatives at the District and Club level. An excellent example of an international literacy project is the Pencarrow Rotary Club's Books for Xiamen Project. The Club responded to a request from the XIamen City Library for books to establish a NZ section in the Xiamen LibraryLibrary. Go here to read about this literacy project. Mayor Prendergast, with RC Past President Ben Van Rooy. recently presented these books to Ms Lin Ping, Librarian and Director of Research at the Xiamen City Library.

Joy Durrant, District Literacy Convenor

Joy Durrant

How do you see your role, Joy?

JD - I aim to increase the awareness of the Clubs in our District regarding the very positive impact that literacy projects can have locally and internationally.

How do you plan to increase District involvement in local literacy initiatives?

JD - I have researched the number of low decile schools in our District and as far as I am aware only a few of these schools, particularly primary schools, are being supported by Rotary Clubs. My aim is to get as many clubs as possible to support primary schools with dictionaries.

To achieve this aim I intend to facilitate bi-annual orders for bulk deliveries of dictionaries to this District and set up easily accessible distribution points throughout the District from which Clubs can obtain their supplies.

Orders should be sent to me at info@ prosperity.co.nz by 1 September and 1 March each year.

International Youth Exchange: Bridging Continents and Securing our Future

Peter Harvey, Convenor of the IYE Committee, writes that July is a mixture of sadness and smiles, filled with tear filled farewells as host families, club representatives and the youth exchange committee farewell the 'old' students who leave after a year of personal development in 9940. The Committee is however looking forward to welcoming the new fledglings into the Rotary family. Read Peter's report here.

Montreal convention inspires, entertains. Rotarians leave the convention ready to make a difference.

Klinginsmith asks Rotary Clubs to get 'bigger, better and bolder'. Country music legend and philanthropist Dolly Parton spoke at the fourth plenary session on 23 June about the importance of early childhood reading. RI President-elect Ray Klinginsmith closed the convention by outlining plans for his term.

District 9940 Changeover

At District 9940's Changeover, we heard an inspiring outline of his goals from District Governor Howard Tong. This was followed by an arresting moment and then much celebration as DG Howard was welcomed in as the leader of the 9940 District "Gang".

Rotary District Grants

Clubs may now apply for Rotary Foundation District Grants in support of local and international humanitarian and service projects. Most clubs have participated in workshops and seminars provided by District. However, full details of the grants structure and application process are available on the District 9940 Website.

Around $33,000 will be available for distribution to club and/or cluster initiated projects. As a general policy District Grants will require a "dollar for dollar" (1:1) contribution from the applicant club/cluster. A waiver for a portion or all of the 1:1 subsidy will be considered by the District Grants Committee on a case by case basis.

District 9940 clubs and clusters seeking a District Grant should complete a District 9940 District Grant Preliminary Application Form (also available from the District Website) by 31 July 2010. Grant approvals will be advised by 30 September 2010.

Sir John Ilott's posthumous recognition

The late Sir John Ilott (a charter member of the Rotary Club of Wellington in 1921) will be inducted into the Fairfax Media New Zealand Business Hall of Fame on Wed 28 July.
Any 9940 Rotarians wanting to attend this function in Auckland are asked to contact our Rotary Coordinator PDG Rob Crabtree - Zone 7B & part Zone 8 (calpr@xtra.co.nz).   This is a real honour to an early Rotarian who certainly lived the ideal of Service Above Self.
